Weekly Smoke & Bourbon: 02/17/20 – 02/23/20

This week’s pairing combines the nutty sweetness of American Barrels Kentucky Bourbon with the bold and peppery Oliva Melanio.

Whiskey is by far the most popular of all remedies that won’t cure a cold.

Overall Impressions:

This was more of an untraditional pairing, where we combined a full-bodied Oliva Melanio cigar with a “nutty” bourbon that has a hint of sweetness. I personally like this style of pairing from time to time as they tend to balance each other out, but that’s just personal preference.

The Cigar: (Oliva Melanio)

The Oliva Melanio features a beautiful Ecuador Sumatra wrapper with a Nicaraguan filler. This cigar is not on my list of “first cigar” recommendations, but that is absolutely not because this stick isn’t full of flavor. If you are a seasoned vet or someone who likes a bold cigar, then this is for you.

The Melanio from Oliva is loved by many for its bold, black pepper spiciness and hint of dark cocoa. The one I received was flawlessly constructed with a pretty good burn all the way through. If you are in the market for a stronger profile stick, this one is worth looking into.

The Intoxicant: (American Barrels – Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey)

American Barrels was established back in 2014, with a goal to represent two of America’s most beloved things: Guns and Spirits. This whiskey is aged in oak casks and finally filtered through an “ultrasonic refinement process” to finish it off. This process produces a great mix of nutty flavors with a hint of caramel or subtle sweetness, according to my palette.

A bottle that is priced well, and encapsulates two of the things we love here at Smoke & Bourbon: Guns and Bourbon! What is there not to love?

PS: The incorporation of the shotgun shell into the bottle design is brilliant. Well done, American Barrels.

Vibe: “Life is a blessing, enjoy the little things.”

Finally, a relatively warm 50-degree day here in WV. At last, I can sit outside and enjoy a nice stick without my hands going numb. What a blessing.

Kicking back in this patio chair, and enjoying some sun during these winter months was just what I needed to recharge the batteries and let the mind wander. This gave me some time to reflect on all the blessings I have been given throughout my life, and how grateful I am for my current success.

Life isn’t all just ‘smokes and bourbon’, but if you take a moment or two out of your day to “count your blessings”, it helps put life into a different perspective. If you’re ever feeling like your life is a little lackluster, or you are trying to make some changes and you’re running into hurdles, follow the steps below.

Proven Method of Rejuvenation:

  1. Find Chair.
  2. Cut Cigar.
  3. Light Cigar.
  4. Pour a Glass of your beverage of choice.
  5. Sip drink, puff cigar, and enjoy the little things.

“Some people meditate, I smoke cigars.”
