Weekly Smoke & Bourbon: 02/24/20 – 03/01/20
This week’s Smoke & Bourbon pairing combines the smooth sweetness of the Elijah Craig Small Batch with the bold Gurkha Legend Vintage 2001
“ I had a cigar in my mouth and whiskey on my breath. I felt like money. I looked like money. “Charles Bukowski
This pairing introduced an enjoyable range of flavors to my pallet. The medium-bodied smoke of the Vintage 2001 mixed its dark chocolate/coffee flavors with the sweet vanilla notes of the Elijah Craig. The rich flavor notes in this stick really helped bring out more of the vanilla and oaky hints of the bourbon. All subtleties aside, this was just a flat out enjoyable combination and I will definitely be pairing these again during my next smoke session.
The Cigar: (Gurkha Legend Vintage 2001)
The original Gurkha Legend was a very popular cigar in the Gurkha line until the early 2000s. In 2008 the Legend was discontinued and was no longer available to consumers. However, Gurkha has since relaunched this once popular stick as the Legend Vintage 2001.
This stick is made up of a triple fermented Connecticut broadleaf wrapper which was cultivated back in 2001. This aged leaf encapsulates a blend of long-fillers from Cuban seed origins that were grown in the Cibao Valley of the Dominican Republic.
The Vintage 2001 is a medium-bodied smoke that has very prominent rich and creamy flavors. The main flavor notes I picked up were a creamy dark chocolate/coffee blend and a slight woody taste. There was also a slight spicy peppery taste that lingered after the rich creaminess of the smoke left my mouth. Overall it was a very enjoyable smoke.
The Intoxicant: (Elijah Craig Small Batch)
Smooth, tasty, affordable. These are the first three words that come to mind when describing Elijah Craig Small Batch. Coming in at around $30 USD, the Elijah Craig small batch provides good consistent flavor for an affordable price.
This bourbon has a very pleasant sweet aroma like an alcoholic vanilla flower. The main flavors I notices were vanilla and an oaky/woody taste. There was a good bit of sweetness to this bourbon as well, with a nice overall smoothness to each sip. Each sip went down very easily and left a pleasant feel and taste on my pallet.
I notice a little heat on the finish but overall, I feel like this bourbon was pretty smooth and would definitely make a good casual sipper. When you don’t want to break the bank or dip into your stash of finer libations, the Elijah Craig small batch is a great choice.
Vibe: “Little Victories”
This weekend, felt like a well-deserved break from the long work week that had just past. With February coming to an end, it feels like we are moving through 2020 at an insanely fast rate. While sipping on a chilled glass of Elijah Craig, I began to think about my goals for the year and how far off they seem. The weeks are going fast and the days go by even faster but the goals still seem so far away.
Even though it was frustrating to not see the progress I wanted to immediately. I had to remind myself to trust the process and stay on the grind. Once again a nice reflective smoke and drinking session seemed to be just what I needed. Just taking a minute to relax and reflect on the changes I’ve made and work I’ve accomplished so far helped to ease my frustrations.
Focusing on these minor improvements and little victories helped reassure me of my progress. The finish line may be far away but for now, I will puff on my cigar, enjoy the little victories and keep on keepin on.
“ Look for small victories and build on that. Each small victory, even if it is just getting up five minutes earlier, gives you confidence. You realize that these little victories make you feel great, and you keep going. You realize that being paralyzed by fear of failure is worse than failure.”Arnold Schwarzenegger
